Development in the area of natural products of medical importance continues to expand. About 40 per cent of the drugs currently in use are derived from natural sources. During evolution, molecules have been developed for specific functions in nature. These bioactive substances have a potential as candidates in drug development, as pharmacological tools, intermediates or templates for drug synthesis. The book describes the origin of such compounds, their chemistry and biochemistry, as well as their employment in medicine. Pharmacognosy has come a long way since those of us of a certain age struggled to identify and draw various bits and pieces of plant material during our undergraduate days. The simple definition provided in the introductory chapter of this book — “The subject of pharmacognosy deals with natural products used as drugs or for the production and discovery of drugs” — belies its breadth, for it now includes disciplines such as biosynthesis, ethnopharmacology, phytotherapy, phytochemistry and biotechnical drug production, all of which are covered comprehensively in this impressive reference work.

However, the book does not provide the more traditional aspects of pharmacognosy — the morphological and microscopic details necessary for accurate identification of source materials — such as can be found in competing volumes, although there are 13 colour photographs of plants. Since the publication of the previous edition of this book five years ago, new concepts such as chemo- and bioinformatics, phylogenetics and systems biology with the new “omics” techniques (genomics, proteomics and metabolomics) have emerged. Herbal remedies have become the subject of more rigid legislation that aims to improve their quality and efficacy, both as over-the-counter preparations for self-medication and as constituents of conventional medicines.

The substantially revised sixth edition reflects all these developments, drawing together research on the sustainable use of natural products of terrestrial, marine and animal origin in the development of new drugs, scientifically based herbal remedies, and environmentally adapted biomolecules. The material is presented in a clear logical manner with an abundance of chemical structures and diagrams. There are no references in the text, but a bibliography in the form of “further reading” is provided at the end of each chapter. An appendix gives a list of plant-derived drugs used for the preparation of herbal remedies.
